Bob Dylan - One more cup of coffee

Bob Dylan.. If I wouldn't care about the variety of music on this blog I'd probably write about him each day. From time to time I switch favorite artist, but Dylan keeps sticking at no.1 because of his large and phenomenal oeuvre. After having listened one album more than enough, another album shows up and turns out to be even greater than the one you've been listening to.

But at a certain moment comes the point where you've listened all the albums and you're trying to decide which album you like best. I can't choose. I doubt between Nashville Skyline and Desire, probably because their style is quite unusual. Nashville is overall seen good, and Desire has some less good songs but compensates a lot with other ones.

So.. Just a random Dylan song. One of my favorites from the Desire album.

Samba Soul - Mambo #5

This I've been keeping behind for a while because rumors have been going that internationally known DJ Elroy Vanderley was following this blog. After becoming famous he never sends me any tracks no mo, so I refused having him play this song. Sorry for the delay.

This is a banger. On Youtube there is no good version for it, so just go for the link and organize a party with this track on repeat.

Ballad of the hip death goddess

It was not easy letting thousands of daily readers down for several weeks, but everybody needs a holiday now and then..

Today I offer Ballad of the hip death goddess, a psychedelic song by Ultimate Spinach, which is a 60s-born band from the United States of America. Ballad of the hip death goddess is a 8.10min during track, which takes you to higher levels if you just let it float around in your head. Definitely recommend.

Top Drawer - Song of a Sinner

Recently I bought the "Forge your own chains" compilation, on the Stones Throw sub-label Now Again. With that I got myself a nice record, but it also meant that I bought Top Drawers - Song of Sinner on vinyl, and that kind of made my week. There is not a lot to find about either the band or the song, but the sleeve tells a nice story about it:

The Top Drawers are one of the most perplexing of psychedelic ensembles. Their sole offering Solid Oak hints at sly sense of humor and forces those collectors silly enough to list this album in their Ebay searches to endure listing after listing wooden dressers and cabinets. The band recorded at Fultz Recording Studio (the same studio responsible for a slew of Kentucky fink and soul singles, notably the Aristocrats Organization's "Don't Go"), yet there is no indication of whether the band hailed from Kentucky or Southern Ohio. The album was repressed in the early 1980's, yet, an Akarma reissue notwithstanding, none of the band's original members have ever surfaced to explain why they, in the introductory track to an album or rural hard rock with garagey edges, recorded an epic psychedelic number that flirts with perfection.
Steven Geary, the writer of this track and presumably the vocalist, sings with an angelic tone, on contrast to his sinner's lament. The band remain understated, letting their powerful vamp and John Baker's tasteful guitar solo take the front stage. It is our hope that by including this song here, the Top Drawer will somehow take notice of the attention afforded their magnificent "Song of a Sinner" and explain how a group of early twenty-somethings in the middle of America could conjure up such a hair-raising, psychedelic masterpiece-and then vanish, without a trace.

Fela Kuti - Sorrow Tears and Blood

Fela Anikulapo Kuti (15 October 1938 – 2 August 1997), or simply Fela, was a Nigerian multi-instrumentalist musician and composer, pioneer of afrobeat music, human rights activist, and political maverick. James Brown cited him as one of the originators of funk.

While listening to the music, it's worth the time reading his wiki:

Ofcourse, if you like it, do not only download your sorry ass off, but also buy music. This for example, is possible here. It takes more effort, but in the end there's nothing as satisfying as seeing a nice 12" doing it's job.

Funkadelic - You'll like it too

Funkadelic was an African American music band most prominent during the 1970s. It and its sister act Parliament, both led by George Clinton, began the funk music culture of that decade.

The Chakachas - Jungle Fever (1970)

Although they issued numerous recordings, they are best remembered as a one-hit wonder for their hit disco single "Jungle Fever" which sold over a million copies in the U.S. and reached #8. In the UK it fared less well: despite some airplay soon after release it was later banned by the BBC, which took exception to the song's moaning and heavy breathing, first by a woman and later by a man.

War is een jaren zeventig Amerikaans funk bandje uit California. "Although War's lyrics are often socio-political in nature, their music usually had a laid-back, California funk vibe."
